Lionel Richie




Lionel Richie began his career in 1967 with the group The Mystics. Two years later the name changed to The Commodores, which became one of the most successful groups of the 70s. Leading the group and composing most of the lyrics, Lionel established his name.

In the early 1980s, the singer recorded a song by the already established Kenny Rogers: 'Lad'. This was followed by 'Endless Love', the theme song from the film Endless Love, starring Brooke Shields. The song, recorded in partnership with Diana Ross, became the best-selling theme song in film history. Two years later, the inevitable happened: Lionel embarked on a solo career. The LP Lionel Richie featured the song 'Truly' as its lead single. In 1983, he released Can't Slow Down. Three more special tracks were included in this work: 'Hello', 'Penny Lover', and 'Stuck On You'. The result was seven million copies sold. This period was one of the most remarkable of his career, during which he accumulated almost 24 awards.

In 1985, along with Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, the performer had the idea of ​​recording a song, together with big names in American music, to benefit the people of Africa. The song they wrote was 'We Are the World', which became a worldwide sensation. In 1986, he took another million-dollar step in his career. He composed the theme song for the film White Nights: 'Say You, Say Me'. That same year, he recorded his third album, Dancing on the Ceiling. After 14 years on the road, Lionel Richie decided to take a break. Several compilations were released, one of them, Back to Front, which included three new tracks, among them: 'Do it to Me' and 'Destiny'. This was his last work for Motown Records.

With a new contract with Mercury Records, Lionel produced two more albums, Louder Than Words and Time. In 2001, Lionel released Renaissance. Two years later, he returned from a brief hiatus with Encore, followed by a compilation of his most famous hits, titled The Definitive Collection, released at the end of 2003. 

Since 2004, he has produced a total of six Top 40 singles in the UK. On February 1, 2010, Lionel made a remix of "We Are The World" in which Justin Bieber sings his part of the original song. 

On December 9, 2006, Richie performed live on British television in a concert called "An Audience With Lionel Richie." Two months later, he performed "Hello" at the 49th Grammy Awards ceremony. On November 25, 2007, he made a surprise appearance on Australian Idol where he performed a grand finale with "All Night Long (All Night)" at the Sydney Opera House. Richie donated all his profits to Barack Obama to help with his 2008 presidential campaign. Recently, he announced that he would like to rejoin The Commodores.
