Queen

Queen is a British hard rock band formed in London, England in 1971, originally composed of vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor. This lineup remained unchanged throughout the group's original trajectory, which ended with Mercury's death in 1991 and Deacon's subsequent retirement in 1997; however, occasionally, May and Taylor reunite with other musicians to continue the group.
The band started in 1968, when May and Taylor formed the trio Smile along with Tim Staffell, of whom their school friend Freddie Mercury was a big fan, and after Staffell's departure in 1971, Mercury joined the group and changed the name to "Queen," taking on the role of vocalist and pianist.
In 1973, they released their debut album, Queen, followed by Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack, and although the group experienced some worldwide recognition with the song "Killer Queen," it was in 1975 that the band achieved stardom with the album A Night at the Opera, propelled by the song "Bohemian Rhapsody," leading the band to sell millions of records and undertake world tours.
In the years that followed, the group released a succession of highly successful albums and consolidated their career, generating a large number of songs that became music classics, such as "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions", "Love of my Life", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Under Pressure", "Radio Ga Ga", "I Want to Break Free", and many others.
The group's live performances became famous due to Mercury's charismatic and innovative performances, taking the group to a level never before reached, as they were, for example, the first to perform in sold-out stadiums in South America and Africa. In 1987, when the group was once again at the height of its popularity, Mercury was diagnosed with HIV, and fearing for his health, the band chose to stop touring, with the concert on August 9, 1986 being the last with the complete original lineup.
On April 20, 1992, fans shared their grief over Freddie's loss at "The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert," a tribute show that brought together several famous bands and artists, held at Wembley Stadium (London). Musicians such as David Bowie, George Michael, Annie Lennox, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Tony Iommi, and bands like Def Leppard, Extreme, Guns N' Roses, and Metallica, along with the remaining members of Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon), played the band's greatest hits.
The members of Queen never actually broke up, although the last studio album by the original lineup was released in 1995, ironically titled Made In Heaven. The album was made from the last sessions recorded by the singer in 1991, as well as material discarded from previous albums.
In 1997, after recording the music video for "No One But You" (a song in tribute to Freddie Mercury) with Queen, John Deacon decided to retire from the music world to dedicate himself to his family.
Mercury passed away on November 24, 1991, the year the group celebrated two decades in the music industry.
Considered one of the most important bands in the history of rock and roll, Queen has sold over three hundred million records worldwide and is cited as a major influence on several famous bands that emerged from the 80s onwards. Their songs continue to be remembered to this day, making Queen one of the most recognizable bands to the general public due to their unique style.
In 2007, Queen released the single "Say It's Not True," which was also made available for download on the internet. The song, composed by Roger Taylor, is about AIDS.
In 2008, Queen and Paul Rodgers released their first album of new material since Made in Heaven, called "The Cosmos Rocks".
In 2009, Queen and Paul Rodgers split up, the most likely reason being that Paul Rodgers would return to playing with his former band, Bad Company.
In 2009, the compilation album "Absolute Greatest" was released.
In 2011, the band performed at the EMA with Adam Lambert as the vocalist.
Em 2012 a banda se apresenta na Cerimônia de Encerramento dos jogos Olímpicos de Londres, com Jessie J como vocalista.
